Introduction about Initiation Program (IP)
The beginner-level hockey program follows Hockey Canada’s Initiation Program (IP), which includes small-area games to develop skating, passing, and shooting skills, and cross-ice play to increase puck touches and involvement. The program core focuses on fun, skill development and basic gameplay rather than competition, and it was designed to introduce beginners to the game’s basic skills.
Benefits of the Initiation Program :
- To have fun while playing hockey and engaging in physical activity.To learn the fundamental skills required to play the game of hockey.
- To develop and refine basic motor patterns.
- To be introduced to the concepts of cooperation and fair play.Players need full protective equipment to ensure safety on the ice.
Attentation
Players will not be permitted on the ice if they don’t have the essential equipment listed below:
- Helmet with full cage or face shield – CSA-certified helmet with a full-face cage for protection.
- Neck guard – A cut-resistant neck guard, often mandatory in many leagues.
- Shoulder pads – Protects the shoulders, chest, and back from impacts.
- Elbow pads – Guards against falls and collisions.
- Hockey gloves – Provides grip on the stick and protects hands.
- Hockey pants – Padded shorts that protect the hips, thighs, and lower spine.
- Shin guards – Protects the knees and lower legs from pucks and falls.
- Jersey & socks – Usually provided by the team, worn over protective gear.
- Skates – Well-fitted hockey skates for stability and mobility.
- Hockey stick – Proper size and flex based on the child’s height and strength.Additional Gear:
- Base layers (compression gear or long underwear) – Helps with comfort and sweat management.
- Jock/Jill shorts (athletic cup/pelvic protector) – Required for protection.
- Hockey bag – To carry all the equipment.
